SYNOPSIS

Mar is a young woman determined to claim her family inheritance and leave the island behind for good. However, an encounter with Nenu, an elderly troubadour, introduces her to the mesmerising art of Maltese folk singing, tempting her to rediscover a love for the country she wishes to escape. Featuring real artists from the rarely-seen world of Maltese folk music, ŻEJTUNE unveils the deep secrets of tradition and nostalgia, revealing the transformative power of music in connecting fates and generations.

DIRECTOR: Alex Camilleri

 Alex Camilleri is a Maltese-American writer, director, editor, and producer. His debut feature, LUZZU, premiered at Sundance 2021, where it won the Special Jury Award for Acting in addition to the jury, audience, and directing awards. The film has been released theatrically in more than 20 international territories, achieved a “100% Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was Malta’s submission to the 94th Academy Awards. Camilleri won the 2022 “Someone to Watch” Independent Spirit Award and a 2023 Guggenheim fellowship.
