SYNOPSIS

As Layal runs a women-only fuel station in a segregated war-torn town, she is faced with her 12-year-old brother’s growing desire to break free and become a ‘man’. When Layal’s estranged sister unexpectedly shows up with a proposition for their brother, the siblings’ relationship is put to the test. 

 

DIRECTOR: Sara Ishaq

Sara Ishaq is a Yemeni-Scottish film director and screenwriter, based in Amsterdam, with a background in religion, Middle Eastern politics, and international law from the University of Edinburgh. Her debut short film, KARAMA HAS NO WALLS (2012), filmed during Yemen’s Arab Spring, earned Academy Award and BAFTA Scotland nominations. She later directed the award-winning feature documentary THE MULBERRY HOUSE (2013), which premiered at IDFA and aired on Al-Jazeera English. Sara founded Comra, a film foundation and academy, to nurture Yemen’s emerging filmmaking talent amidst the ongoing war.
